What is health insurance?

Everyone in the UK has access to free medical care and treatment on the NHS, however some people opt for a health insurance policy which covers any costs incurred should you decide to seek private medical treatment.

The amount of cover can vary dramatically depending on the policy that you choose, and all at varying monthly premiums. While most health insurance policies can cover conditions up to hernia removal or hip replacements, you may choose to include additional levels of cover such as fast-track diagnoses or treatments not currently available on the NHS for more long-term illnesses such as cancer.

It is usually possible to ‘customise’ your cover to make it unique to your own circumstances while trying to keep the monthly costs low. Some of the varying options available can include:

  • Comprehensive cancer cover
  • Mental health
  • Therapies
  • Outpatient cover

You can also choose a higher or lower level of excess should you make a claim, or request to be added to specific hospital lists for treatment, both of which can affect your monthly premium.

What kinds of health insurance are there?

Although you may have heard differently, private health insurance doesn’t have to be expensive. There are so many types of plans out there that you can choose one that suits your budget and provides peace of mind for the future.

Here are some of the generic types of health insurance:

Individual - Designed to provide single people with cover against potential lengthy NHS waiting times and gain fast access to treatments

Family - Rather than buying individual policies for all members of a family, this type of group cover gives everyone in your family adequate cover in the event any of them fall ill or sustain an injury

Child - This type of cover is specifically tailored to accommodate a child and their growing needs

Joint -Tailored for couples, joint health insurance ensures that both people receive prompt treatment and at the hospital of their choice

What isn’t covered by health insurance?

As with most insurance policies, some things are excluded, including:

  • Visits to A&E
  • Any pre-existing conditions you had before taking out the policy
  • Any treatment for current chronic conditions
